The American Temperament Test Society holds special tests throughout the country that test a dog's true temperament. Unlike a CGC, the temperament test is not based on training and socialization. It only tests the dog's reactions to situations encountered during the test.

In brief the test is held in a large field and manned by many volunteers. Only one dog goes through the test at a time. The dog's owner is not allowed to speak, coach or guide the dog at any time. The dog goes through the test on the end of a six foot leash. The dog is graded by a tester from the ATTS who is qualified to judge reactions.

This test judges the dog's responses to various people who interact with the owner and dog, responses to various sounds such as gun fire, various surprising situations such as an umbrella popping open close to the dog, different touch sensations such as walking on plastic and metal grating and responses to extreme aggression towards the owner and dog.
